Fieldwalking

Archaeologists often talk about ‘fieldwalking’: this involves walking over ploughed fields looking for archaeological ‘finds’ – things like bits of pottery, flint, tile and metal. The finds can be collected and then studied to help us understand if there has been a settlement in the area at some point in the past.

Members of the SAAS have carried out a number of fieldwalking projects at sites including the Knights Templar field at Copmanthorpe, Manor Farm in Acaster Malbis, Woolas Hall Farm at Appleton Roebuck and Hornington Manor.
